This paper describes the requirements, the applicability and some results of an empirical study of the life cycle costing approach for products in die and mold making industry. The life time phases spanning method for determination and tracing of life cycle costs achieves success to bundle know-how from operation, to quantify costs and to determine critical points in regarded die/mold systems. From the entered and analyzed data measures can be derived, which shall reduce or even prevent less performance and malfunction of dies. Further on these data might also be taken into account during planning and production of future production equipment. Requirements for a system supporting the Life Cycle Cost LCC method are discussed opposite to the actual Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
