Project title Modification free torsion and torque measurement (Modimo)
Project duration 01.10.2023 – 30.09.2025

The aim of the Modimo project is to research non-contact torque measurement on a non-modified shaft.

Knowledge of the applied torque on a shaft is elementary for the operation of a variety of technical applications, such as generators in wind or hydroelectric power plants or turbines in ships or aircraft.

Various sensors are available for measuring the torque, which can be divided into non-contact and contact sensors on the basis of the measuring method. IPH has already researched a non-contact measurement method for torque detection in the IntegrAD and MiniVib research projects.

Non-contact sensors have the advantage of less wear and tear and thus enable lower-maintenance operation of the systems. However, a prerequisite for the use of non-contact sensors is prior preparation of the shaft, for example by attaching add-on parts or markings to the shaft. In the Modimo project, the possibility of measuring the torque on a non-modified shaft without contact is being researched for the first time.
