Artificial intelligence (AI) is able to help finding wind energy potential areas that are accepted by the population.

In many regions of Germany, citizens are committed to opposing the expansion of wind energy. They are concerned about species protection, reject changes to the landscape or fear noise pollution. Such conflicts delay the construction of wind turbines and jeopardize the success of the energy turnaround.

This situation is to be remedied by an AI-based geoinformation system (GIS) that takes into account technical, ecological, social, geographical and economic factors that influence the acceptance of wind turbines. A concept for such a GIS is being developed in the WindGISKI project. The data will be used to estimate the acceptance of the local population for the installation of wind turbines on the respective sites.

Thus, the project contributes to the selection of suitable areas for the erection of wind turbines on a uniform basis and to the early detection of obstacles.

Publications about the project

Progress is urgently needed in the energy transition - but there are always acceptance problems and lawsuits with renewable energies. In the project "WindGISKI", a geoinformation system based on artificial intelligence is to be developed, which addresses these issues. In a preliminary project, influencing factors within the area of conflict between species, environmental and climate protection have already been identified. An interdisciplinary team from science and industry is now taking the next step with the development of artificial intelligence.
