Press release

The project's goal is to develop a camera-based evaluation system for automatically identifying non ergonomical assembly procedures in real time. With this system, from an ergonomical point of view, critical procedures are recognized and alternative assembly procedures are shown to the worker.

There are multiple benefits using the proposed system: Companies are able to ergonomically optimize assembly operations and therefore not only save worker's health but also minimize assembly errors in the long run.

State of the art ergonomic analysis is still in need of an expert evaluating videotaped assembly tasks. An automatic system may be a game-changer for small and medium sized enterprises, having a small invest and no need for a highly skilled worker.

Publications about the project

How ergonomic is my workplace? Scientists from Hanover have developed evaluation software that can answer this question quickly and objectively. The digital ergonomics evaluator is particularly helpful for small and medium-sized companies: In the future, they will be able to carry out ergonomics assessments without much effort to protect their assembly workers from back and knee pain, tendonitis or similar problems.

Awkward bending, lifting heavy items, working overhead: Such movements may cause permanent health problems. As a preventive measure, researchers of IPH and IFA developed an ergonomics assessment tool for assembly workplaces: 3D cameras capture unhealthy movements automatically.

Work-related illnesses and their results may pose a threat to businesses' productivity. This may as well affect businesses' competitiveness for the worse. A workplace designed by methods of ergonomic workplace-design may counter some of the caused issues. But companies often lack knowledge or fear required financial resources to restructure workplaces. With this article technical requirements to an automated ergonomics assesment system are described.
