Project title Development of a maturity model to prepare for the successful introduction of AGVs in SMEs (FTS-Ready)
Project duration 01.08.2025 – 31.07.2027

Efficient intralogistics transport processes have become increasingly important due to developments such as Industry 4.0, e-commerce, and mass customization. These trends pose significant challenges, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which additionally face a shortage of skilled workers and rising cost pressures. At the same time, the automation of intralogistics processes offers considerable potential to improve efficiency and strengthen competitiveness. In this context, the use of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) represents a promising solution.

To reduce the barriers to AGV adoption in SMEs, the FTS-Ready project develops a method based on a readiness maturity model (RMM). The RMM evaluates existing infrastructure and processes to determine an SME’s readiness for AGV implementation and to identify the measures required prior to deployment. In addition, the method incorporates a decision-support tool that recommends manufacturer-independent AGV solutions based on specific logistical requirements. The complete approach is implemented as a software demonstrator.

Manufacturing companies benefit from the RMM by gaining a clear understanding of how well their current processes and technologies support the use of AGVs. This enables them to plan targeted investments and avoid unnecessary expenditure by focusing on the measures that are truly required. Consulting companies benefit from a structured and systematic approach to successful AGV implementation.
