In order to make an intelligent compact brake unit (CBU) for railed vehicles ready for marketing, a medium-sized enterprise from Lower Saxony and the IPH are together developing a new production process.

The corporative project's main goal is to reduce weight. That is why the heaviest component of the CBU – the brake caliper – is going to be forged, instead of casting. Due to a higher strength-to-weight ratio, forged brake calipers are smaller and lighter. In this way, the entire train's energy consumption decreases.

Furthermore, it is a project's goal to establish an overall production process that excels in a high economic efficiency. This is going to be achieved by the aid of a testing bench, which will be specially designed to check the correct function of the CBU automatically, and a versatile assembly concept, which allows to flexibly adapt the production output to the demand.
