Press release
If a plant operator plans to acquire a new production system, he first asks for bids from different suppliers. Based on the requirements the suppliers create a rough planning, in a rough layout and the appropriate resources are selected. The offer is created with minimal time and expense. Depending on the requirements of the customers different layout variations and configurations of the system are then compared. To reduce the amount of planning work and the high planning costs, a procedure should be developed in this research project, that supports the system designer in the general planning phase. Using the techniques of data mining the layout selection and configuration should be automated. The knowledge of experienced plant designers was used as a base to get to the AI-based algorithms and so to make the expert knowledge available for automation. The software, which was developed in the project, should also allow the reconfiguration and optimization of existing plants.

Publications about the project

The first challenge in the planning process of production systems is the creation of a rough draft of the system with minimal time and cost. From this an offer for the customer is then derived. This article describes a model-based approach for rough planning and its demonstrative implementation. The approach allows modeling at a high abstraction level. This reduces the modeling effort, the possible modeling errors and the documentation effort considerably.
