In bulk metal forming, high temperatures are required to facilitate deformation. At the same time, elevated temperatures are disadvantageous for the energy balance and lead to secondary heating effects (scale formation) during the forming process.
This project investigates improvements in the quality and stability of forming steel parts using the cross-wedge rolling process. The work involves planning experiments and conducting hands‑on experimental investigations.
Your tasks
Experimental Design and Analysis
- Development of test designs for different heating patterns
- Investigation of forming defects and derivation of optimization measures
- Analysis of process stability through temperature control
Measurement & Analysis
- Development of a measurement strategy for automated acquisition of temperature distribution in the workpiece
- Surface analysis: evaluation of the surface structure resulting from each heating method
- Determination of scale formation rate and component accuracy
Your profile
You are studying one of the following fields:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Production & Logistics
- Sustainable Engineering Sciences
- Forming Technology/Materials Engineering
You have an interest in forming technology/metrology and simulation/automation.
You have knowledge of FEM, simulation, design, and/or materials engineering.
Good written and spoken German is required.
Programming skills (Python, C++) are highly desirable.
The job cannot be carried out predominantly via remote work.
We offer
- Independent, responsible work
- Full supervision of your thesis/project work
- Flexible working hours
- Well equipped workstations
- Home office by arrangement
- Fully stocked kitchen with fruit basket
- Potential for long term collaboration
